New Year’s Resolutions: 4 Tips To Sticking With Them All Year

Updated Content 01/03/2025New Year’s Resolutions

Do you often set ambitious New Year’s resolutions yet find yourself struggling to stick to them throughout the year? Or maybe you just want extra help setting and keeping up with good habits. If this sounds like you, Boardman Training Center has four tips for keeping your resolutions to reach your goals!

Take A Closer Look At Your Goals For The Year

The first step in making sure you stick to your New Year’s resolutions is to ensure they are attainable long-term. If you set a goal that is too ambitious or unrealistic, chances are you will give up on it before reaching it. Setting smaller, more attainable goals is an excellent way to help keep yourself motivated and on the track to completing your goal.

Using the SMART goal-setting process allows you to break down your large goal into more manageable steps, giving you a better idea of what you’ll need to do to achieve your goal. Check out this blog from our sister school, East Ohio College, for a step-by-step guide on how to break your goal into a SMART goal!

Adapt Your Resolutions

As you closely examine the resolutions you set for yourself at the start of the year, you may realize that your goal no longer fits your current situation. Adapting your resolution to something that makes sense for your life trajectory is okay. For example, let’s say your New Year’s resolution was to better your future by attending nursing school. After researching a nursing career, you decided you couldn’t picture yourself as a nurse. Instead, you are interested in a career as an EKG Technician.

You can adjust your resolution to attending an EKG technician training program, which is still working toward your goal of bettering your future. Just because you set one specific resolution doesn’t mean you can’t change your goals as your life progresses!

Start Positive Habits

It’s never too late to develop positive habits to improve your life. According to an article published by Psych Central, it takes only 66 days for a habit to become routine. This means that you can establish routines by thinking about what parts of your life could be improved by changing your habits and implementing changes in a matter of months!

The key is to start small and stay consistent. Begin by setting realistic goals that are achievable within your daily schedule. Tracking your progress can be incredibly motivating. Consider using a journal or an app to note each day you successfully maintain your habit. Celebrate small milestones to keep your spirits high and reinforce your commitment to positive change.

Get Support

Finding someone within your support system with similar goals can help you stick to your plans, hold you accountable, and motivate you not to give up. Whether it be a family member, close friend, classmate, or community support group; having people you can rely on to support while on the path to achieving your goals can make a big difference in your success. Remember, you are not alone in your journey to self-improvement.

Ultimately, surrounding yourself with people who positively influence you can help you achieve your goals and enrich your life with meaningful connections and shared experiences. Remember, the people you surround yourself with can inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
