5 Ways to Celebrate Men’s Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month!

Men’s Health Month was established in 1994 by the Men’s Health Network. This month of recognition aims to raise awareness about men’s health and encourage men to attend regular doctor visits, undergo early preventive screenings, and adopt healthy lifestyle choices. The official symbol of Men’s Health Month is a blue ribbon. Wearing blue throughout June can show your support in a minimal yet impactful way.

Boardman Training Center (BTC) has created a list of meaningful ways to participate in Men’s Health Month. Keep reading this blog to discover five key activities that promote awareness, prevention, and encourage wellness for the men in your life. Whether you’re focusing on your own health or encouraging others to take charge of theirs, now is the perfect time to focus on well-being, prevention, support, and taking steps to lead a healthier lifestyle.

1. Educate Yourself and Others

Educating yourself and others is an essential step towards improving your health and well-being, as well as creating awareness about common health issues men face. Make it a priority to educate yourself about potential health concerns and the importance of taking proactive steps to maintain your health, such as undergoing regular screenings. To make the best decision for your health, being informed is crucial. Seek medical advice from your doctor and other healthcare professionals to better understand the risks and available preventive measures.

2. Visit Your Doctor

Make an appointment with your regular doctor as soon as possible! Routine health checkups play a crucial role in detecting potential health issues early, such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Detecting these conditions before symptoms appear enables earlier intervention, which significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and better long-term outcomes.

Before your doctor’s appointment, take a few minutes to jot down any symptoms, questions, or concerns you want to address. Bringing this list with you helps ensure that you discuss everything during your visit and make the most of your time with the doctor. Consider bringing a trusted friend or family member as well. They can help support you by listening, taking notes, and discussing everything with you afterward.

3. Change Your Diet and Exercise

Maintaining a nutritious diet along with regular physical activity plays a vital role in supporting both mental and physical health. Together, they help prevent chronic illnesses, boost energy levels, and improve mental well-being. These habits also reduce stress, promote better sleep, and contribute to an overall higher quality of life.

Cooking at home, rather than eating out, can help you eat healthier and save money. Choose fresh foods by shopping at local markets or stores that offer natural ingredients. Plan your meals in advance to avoid impulse buys and ensure you know how to use everything you bring home. To stay active, consider joining a gym, going for daily morning walks, or participating in a local athletic group. The key is to keep moving and fuel your body with plenty of fruits and vegetables!

4. Get Plenty of Rest

Make it a habit to prioritize a good night’s sleep! Getting enough sleep isn’t just about feeling rested; it’s a key component of disease prevention and mental wellness. The Mayo Clinic recommends that adults have at least seven hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep every day can significantly improve your physical and emotional health.

When you’re sleep-deprived, your immune defenses drop, making it easier for viruses to take hold. Additionally, your cognitive functions—such as focus, decision-making, and emotional regulation—may be impaired, which can affect your productivity and overall well-being. So, get some sleep!

5. Spend Time with Those You Love

This June, take a moment to appreciate the value of quality time with those who matter most. Beyond creating memories, time spent with family and friends plays a vital role in supporting your physical, mental, and emotional health. Strong relationships can boost well-being and even increase life expectancy.

Families who engage in activities together, such as walks, sports, or shared meals, are more likely to adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles, which helps reduce the risk of chronic conditions. Positive social interactions can also strengthen the immune system, building resistance to illnesses.
