The Celts thought that on the night of October 31st, the spirits of the deceased would return to the earthly realm, leading the living to provide them with food offerings in hopes of receiving protection during the harsh winter months. This date also marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
Meanwhile, as the practice of Christianity gained popularity, Samhain evolved into All Hallows’ Eve, a holy celebration of honoring saints and martyrs. All Hallows’ Eve gradually morphed into the Halloween celebration we know today. “My favorite part of Halloween is watching my daughter be excited about dressing up and heading out to trick or treat. As a kid, I loved bobbing for apples and baking the pumpkin seeds out of the pumpkins we had as decorations.”

“My favorite Halloween tradition is carving the pumpkins I grow in my garden! I save all the seeds to replant for next year and roast the leftover ones for my favorite Falltime snack (a close second to Pumpkin Delight Cookies)!”

“My favorite Halloween tradition is decorating with my kids. The kids love getting the totes out of the attic with all the fall and spooky decorations and helping me decide where to put them in or outside the house. They all have their favorite things to put up: bats, ghosts, or pumpkins. While we decorate, we put on a good Spotify playlist and dance around while decorating. Then, we make bat-shaped pasta for dinner that night to get us in the spooky spirit for the rest of the season!”

“My favorite Halloween tradition is going to the pumpkin patch, carving jack-o-lanterns, and baking the seeds afterward. My grandma used to take us every year, let us help decorate her front porch, and send us home with warm seeds to snack on during our drive home.”
