Get To Know Sandy Poynter, BTC’s Campus Director

As the Campus Director at Boardman Training Center (BTC), Sandy Poynter is committed to helping her students achieve their career goals. “I really want to see each student fulfill their goals and their dreams. It’s my mission to prepare them for their careers in whatever they choose, whether that is EKG, phlebotomy, or medical assisting,” said Sandy.Sandy Poynter Campus Director

Sandy is passionate about education and believes it is essential. “The students drive me to work in education. Meeting them at the beginning and watching them grow and succeed in their careers is amazing. I love seeing the results. We watch them walk in one day, and months later, we watch them walk out the door, successful and with smiles on their faces,” said Sandy.

There are no other training centers in the Youngstown area, so Sandy believes the Boardman Training Center is a necessary resource for the local community. Due to the increased access to healthcare, the aging baby boomer population, and the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry has expanded for many years. “The area is in desperate need of medical professionals,” said Sandy.

Boardman Training Center helps fill healthcare professionals’ needs by providing accelerated healthcare training classes that students complete in months, not years. With short-term courses, one-on-one instruction, and smaller class sizes, students can get the training they need quickly to help them start their careers faster.

For anyone thinking about attending BTC, Sandy wants you to know that she, the staff, and the instructors are here for you personally to help prepare you for career success. “You are not just a number. You are a name. We’re like a family here. Being so small, we get to know our students personally. Every one of us in this building wants to see our students thrive,” said Sandy.

The Path To Campus Director

Before starting her career in the education industry, Sandy worked at a library for over 20 years. She began right out of high school as a clerk and then moved up to become an administrative assistant.

After deciding she wanted a career change, Sandy chose Ohio Valley College of Technology (now East Ohio College) to earn her degree. She attended in 1995 for a business degree and again in 2012 for medical office administration. When she was enrolled in 2012, she decided to continue to earn her medical assisting degree. Sandy has three associate degrees and is also nationally certified.

After graduating from OVCT, she took her skills and knowledge to the medical field to work in a doctor’s office for two years. Soon after, an instructor position at Boardman Training Center became available. Sandy applied and was offered the position and entered the world of education, teaching students essential healthcare stills at BTC.

Sandy was then recruited to teach students at East Ohio College, her alma mater, and BTC’s sister school. From 2016 to 2021, she worked tirelessly to provide students in Northeastern Ohio with quality healthcare training.

Her passion for student success and instrumental role as an instructor led her to accept the position of Campus Director at Boardman Training Center. Sandy loves that she has the ability to ensure students are happy and successful and that the staff feels appreciated.

Sandy says that her role motivates her every day. “I’m driven knowing that there are staff and students that rely on me. I can build relationships with each of them. It’s great knowing that there is a need and want for me here at BTC,” said Sandy.

Sandy has some excellent advice for those pursuing their dreams. “The best advice ever given to me is that if you set your goals and put your mind to it, the sky is the limit. If you put your mind to whatever you want, you will achieve it,” said Sandy.

Sandy says she enjoys spending time with her family, her sons Zach and Cameron, and her friends outside of work. “I love family vacations, picnics in the backyard, barbeques, and doing things outdoors, like going to local parks and taking neighborhood walks,” she said.
