Meet Michele Nutt, our student highlight feature for this week here at Boardman Training Center!
Michele is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program and is preparing for a fulfilling career in the healthcare field. She has already completed the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program and decided to continue her education by enrolling in an additional program that will train her in various added medical office skills.
Before deciding to attend BTC, Michele was a housewife and stay-at-home mom for 16 years. “My husband works on the railroad for Norfolk Southern, and I have been home raising our two daughters, which are now in high school!”
Michele previously attended school in 1987 for medical assisting and says her experience was rewarding because she earned a medical assisting certification while in the program.
After being home with her kids for years, Michele was ready to go back to school to earn professional healthcare certifications*. She chose Boardman Training Center because “the class schedule was convenient and worked well with my girls’ extracurricular activities.”
“I enjoyed medical assisting and especially phlebotomy when I was in the field. What is extra special about BTC is that I have the opportunity to become an EKG technician as well,” said Michele.
Michele says that being an adult learner and going back to school after so many years was scary for her, but that Boardman Training Center made her feel confident and knowledgeable again. “I am proud of myself. I have a new purpose to look forward to and a new sense of self after raising my girls. BTC made me feel welcome and safe in a comfortable learning environment,” said Michele.
When asked who is her favorite teacher at Boardman Training Center, Michele said, “I would have to say without a doubt my favorite teacher is Sandy Poynter. She has made me feel welcome and has been the most helpful teacher I have ever had. I feel comfortable to ask for help.”
So far, Michele’s favorite class has been phlebotomy, but she says that overall, she has liked all her classes.
After completing her healthcare training programs at BTC, Michele would like to work a Monday through Friday job that allows her to enjoy her girls and their high school years and sports.
In five years, Michele says she would like to be working in a doctor’s office with amazing coworkers as a team. She wants to feel like she has an extended family at work.
When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Michele said yes. “I absolutely would recommend BTC to anyone interested in becoming a phlebotomist, a medical assistant, or an EKG technician. The billing and coding certification* is a nice bonus as well.”
“I would like to thank the staff at BTC for all the help and understanding over this past year with COVID restrictions, online school, and anything in between. They are always helpful and courteous,” said Michele.
