Meet Mikalena Grewe, our student highlight feature for this week at Boardman Training Center!
As a current student in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, Mikalena is completing her healthcare training classes, preparing for a new career that will allow her to help people and make a difference every day.
“I chose BTC because of the one-on-one environment you get. The classes are smaller, so each student is more likely to have one-on-one help from the teachers. I was also happy with the pricing of the classes and the classes they offer being a steppingstone into the medical field to be able to further my career one day,” said Mikalena.
Before enrolling with BTC, Mikalena was unsure of what to do and what direction she wanted to go. She had previously attended a larger university after high school, and while she loved the college environment, she wasn’t in love with her major of high school education. Education allowed her to help students but didn’t give her the same feeling as working in the medical field.
“I was struggling to decide if I wanted to further my education at a university, taking out more student loans and not knowing where in the medical field I wanted to be, or going back to a career center and being a CNA again,” said Mikalena.
After deciding that she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and choosing to enroll with Boardman Training Center, Mikalena started school in the Cardio Phlebotomy career training program.
“I picked the Cardio Phlebotomy program because of how much education I would receive, and by having certifications in both EKG and phlebotomy, I would have better job opportunities,” she said.
While enrolled in the Cardio Phlebotomy program, students have the opportunity to train for a new healthcare career in only 24 weeks, practicing hands-on skills that will be used on the job. Performing EKGs, drawing blood, and carrying out venipuncture procedures are just some of the hands-on skills students learn in this exciting program.
At Boardman Training Center, we love providing our students with a supportive and caring environment that feels more like a family than a school.
“My favorite part of BTC is that after so many weeks, the students in your classes and the instructors start to become a family. You are working together to help one another become successful in the field. Each student and staff member is rooting for you. I have met people I hope to have in my life for years to come,” said Mikalena.
So far, Mikalena’s favorite class has been phlebotomy. Due to COVID-19, the classes have been broken into groups, and her instructor Nikki has been great. “She is always encouraging and willing to help whenever students need her,” said Mikalena. She is also very thankful for Sandy, her instructor for the intro class. “Even after intro ended, I’ve been able to text her to ask questions or call when needed. I’m grateful that BTC has such amazing teachers.”
After graduation, Mikalena hopes to work in a hospital as a phlebotomist. in five years, her goal is to save enough money to go back to school to become a CT or MRI technician.
When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Mikalena said, “Yes, I would refer a friend to BTC because of the affordable price and the friendly people they would meet along the way.”
