Meet Sarah Steiner, our student highlight feature for this week!
Sarah is enrolled in the Phlebotomy Technician program at Boardman Training Center, preparing for an exciting and rewarding healthcare career!
“I chose BTC because of the shorter program length and no student loans,” says Sarah. When she came to visit the campus for the first time, Sarah had a great impression of BTC. She loved how small it was, how quickly she could complete the classes, and that the instructors can help more and are very hands-on.
Before enrolling with BTC, Sarah had previously attended a larger university for two years. She had first majored in fashion merchandising and then went back after a few years for medical assisting. She decided it wasn’t right for her and took some time off, working a variety of retail jobs in the past few years. She knew that these were just jobs, and not a career, and didn’t want to be in them for long.
“I chose this program because the medical field has always interested me and I love helping people,” says Sarah. At first, she wanted to complete the Medical Office Specialist program, but after starting her phlebotomy class, she loved it and realized she wanted to start working and doing that right away. Sarah says she may come back for the MOS program one day!
When asked what her favorite part is of attending Boardman Training Center, Sarah said, “The educators are phenomenal, and I love that I didn’t have to take out student loans.” Not having to take out student loans was important to Sarah because she had already taken out a lot when she attended the university.
“My phlebotomy instructor Irene was my absolute favorite. She made me feel very prepared for each test and the NHA,” says Sarah, who’s ideal job after graduation is working as a Phlebotomist in a hospital.
Sarah has always wanted to work in healthcare, and she was referred to BTC by a friend who attended the Phlebotomy Technician career training program as well.
Sarah loves that she is graduating and does not owe loans to anyone for completing the program. She was recently hired at UPMC and starts her new career next week!
In five years, Sarah would like to be a Lab Manager in a hospital setting. She loves the hands-on environment and feels she would be a good leader. She would also like to work with people who have similar interests as her.
Sarah’s advice for anyone just starting the program is to be proactive in getting prepared for the NHA tests and getting help with your resume. “BTC is great for getting you ready for your career,” says Sarah.
Sarah says she would absolutely refer friends to Boardman Training Center! “The teachers are extremely educated in their field and the entire staff will make sure you’re prepared for your career.”
