Boardman Training Center (BTC) understands the challenges that students with ADHD must face daily and how pursuing their education may add to these challenges. ADHD can significantly impact academic performance, so it is crucial to provide students with ADHD with the resources they need to be successful. Keep reading to learn more about ADHD, how it can affect students, and resources to help manage symptoms during school.

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder characterized by symptoms such as impulsiveness, disorganization, difficulties with focus, poor time management, and more, which can significantly impact students. Although ADHD is often diagnosed more frequently in males due to their more visible behaviors, females can also experience the disorder. It is advisable for individuals with symptoms that interfere with daily life to consult a trusted healthcare professional.

ADHD is classified into three subtypes: inattentive type, hyperactive/impulsive type, and combined type. Identifying the specific subtype is crucial for creating effective treatment and academic strategies.

Individuals with ADHD can manage their symptoms through medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. With the right treatment plan, they can successfully manage their symptoms and achieve positive academic outcomes.

Resources For Students With ADHD

For students with ADHD, higher education can pose additional challenges. However, a fulfilling and successful academic experience is achievable with the proper support and resources.

Students with ADHD often find that specific strategies help them manage their symptoms and thrive academically. Practical approaches include enhancing organizational skills, setting achievable goals, and incorporating regular breaks throughout the day. Furthermore, seeking support from family, friends, academic advisors, or mental health professionals can be incredibly beneficial.

Tactical Tools

  • Physical Activity

Engaging in physical activity can help students release pent-up energy and improve their concentration and motivation. During study breaks, taking walks, doing yoga, or engaging in any other activity you enjoy can be beneficial.

  • Noise Canceling Headphones or Focus Music

Noise can be a major distraction for students with ADHD, and noise-canceling headphones can help block out distracting sounds. Also, choosing a playlist of music curated to help improve concentration can be helpful.

  • Fidgets

Some popular fidget tools, such as squeeze balls, spinners, or pop-its, have been known to help students with ADHD by providing a non-distracting way to keep their hands busy, improving concentration, and reducing restlessness.

  • Color-Coded Planner or Calendar

For students who prefer a physical list as opposed to using a virtual service, a color-coded planner or calendar can be an excellent tool for organizing essential tasks.

Virtual Tools

  • Virtual Task Manager

Many online task management services, both free and paid versions, allow students to input their tasks and organize them in a way that works for them. Task management services such as Asana or Todoist enable students to see their to-do lists visually, helping things not slip through the cracks.

  • Text to Audio Service

An online service that converts bodies of text into audio, like Speechify, allows students who struggle to focus on large written text to listen to material rather than read it.

  • Virtual Therapy

A comprehensive way to manage the symptoms of ADHD is through speaking with a trained professional. Virtual therapy services such as BetterHelp and Talkspace offer therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is commonly used to manage the effects of ADHD.

  • Focus Timer

A focus timer helps students who struggle with distraction and need structure during their study time. A good online timer app for students is Be Focused, which allows students to set a duration of study time followed by short breaks.
